LPU Breaking: Classes Suspended for 10 Days; Mid-Term Exams Postponed
Protests Over Unverified Rape-Suicide Claims Turn Violent; Police-Student Clashes, Damage to Property Reported

Jalandhar/Chandigarh, September 27, 2026: Lovely Professional University (LPU), Phagwara, has announced the suspension of regular classes for 10 days from September 28 and postponed the Mid-Term Tests (MTT) until further notice, following two days of protests and unrest on the campus.
According to the university's latest communication, students may, in consultation with their parents/guardians, travel to their hometowns during the 10-day period. Those staying on campus have been advised to remain inside their hostels or places of residence and avoid unnecessary movement or involvement in any unrest.
What happened at LPU
The unrest began late Saturday night after reports circulated among students alleging that a female student had been raped on the campus and subsequently died by suicide. The claims had not been independently established. LPU maintained that false and fabricated rumours were being circulated and said there was no truth in the allegations.
The protests intensified as students gathered near the girls' hostels and later moved towards the main entrance. Campus property was damaged, windows were smashed and some items were set on fire. Students also blocked the Jalandhar-Phagwara National Highway, disrupting traffic.
Police said an FIR was registered at Satnampura police station under Section 64 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against an unknown person, while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to investigate the matter. Jalandhar Range DIG Naveen Singla said the investigation would include CCTV footage, forensic evidence and phone analysis, and that student representatives would be kept in the loop.
The situation escalated further on Sunday when students again blocked the highway and clashed with police. Reports said stones were allegedly pelted at police personnel, while police resorted to lathi-charge. Police vehicles were damaged and at least one police jeep was set on fire; injuries to police personnel and students were reported.
Against this backdrop, LPU has now decided to suspend classes for 10 days with effect from September 28. The university has also postponed the Mid-Term Examinations (MTT) until further notice. A revised examination schedule will be communicated separately through the University Management System (UMS).
Students have been advised to remain calm, follow official instructions and stay connected with UMS for further updates.
