Rain Alert on May 6 in Punjab & Chandigarh; Dry weather expected till May 9

Chandigarh, May 6, 2026 (ANI): The India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for parts of Punjab and Chandigarh, warning of thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds on Tuesday, even as recent rainfall has brought relief from the intense heat in the region.
According to the Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, the temperature in the region has dropped by 0.1°C in the last 24 hours and is currently about 6.1°C below normal levels, indicating a significant cooling trend compared to seasonal averages.
Officials said that on May 6, several districts are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph. The affected districts include Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Hoshiarpur, SBS Nagar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Rupnagar, Patiala, and SAS Nagar (Mohali).
The weather department has cautioned residents to remain alert during the period of unstable weather conditions, especially in open areas due to lightning risks.
Despite the short-term weather activity, officials have indicated that conditions are expected to turn dry after May 6, with no major warnings in place till May 9.
Meanwhile, Rupnagar recorded the highest temperature at 34.1°C at Bhakra Dam, though overall temperatures across Punjab and Chandigarh remained relatively lower due to recent rainfall activity.
Authorities have advised farmers and residents to stay updated with official weather forecasts as conditions may vary locally during the alert period.
