Shaheed Udham Singh's Sankalp Divas observed
Ferozepur, March 13, 2025: Sankalp Divas was observed by the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial Committee on Thursday at the Shaheed Udham Singh Memorial Bhavan. The event commenced with the recitation of Sukhmani Sahib, followed by performances by Raagi and Dhaadi groups, who sang ballads of martyrs, evoking a strong patriotic sentiment. Langar and refreshments were served throughout the day.
Floral tributes were offered at the statue of Shaheed Udham Singh at the memorial, followed by a tribute at the Shaheed Udham Singh Chowk in the city.
Providing historical context, President Bhagwan Singh Sama and Advocate Baljit Singh Kamboj stated that on March 13, 1940, Shaheed Udham Singh avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer at Caxton Hall in London, fulfilling his vow.
Sama saidk Udham Singh (born Sher Singh; 26 December 1899 – 31 July 1940) was an Indian revolutionary associated with the Ghadar Party and the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). He is best known for assassinating Michael O'Dwyer, the former lieutenant governor of Punjab, on March 13, 1940. This act was carried out as retribution for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919 in Amritsar, where Singh himself was a survivor. Subsequently, he was tried, convicted, and hanged in July 1940. While in custody, Singh adopted the name 'Ram Mohammad Singh Azad,' symbolizing India's three major religions and his anti-colonial sentiment.
Highlighting Shaheed Udham Singh’s unparalleled example of patriotism, Sama recalled how he (Udham Singh) avenged the Jallianwala Bagh assacter 21 years later and laid down his life fighting against opperations.
Due to the extreme heat in July, the committee, in consultation with local communities, decided to hold a grand annual event on March 13 instead of July 31, which marks his martyrdom day, said Sama.
