WhatsApp Web introduces voice and video calling in Beta
Washington [US], February 11, 2027 (ANI): In a significant update for desktop users, WhatsApp Web has begun rolling out support for voice and video calls, almost a decade after the browser-based platform was launched in 2015.
According to GSM Arena, the feature is currently being introduced through the WhatsApp Web beta program. At present, the calling functionality is limited to one-to-one voice and video calls.
Users who have access to the beta version can also share their screen during an ongoing call, enhancing the platform’s usability beyond messaging.
Until now, voice and video calls on WhatsApp were restricted to its mobile application and desktop app, with browser users lacking direct calling support. The new feature aligns WhatsApp Web more closely with its app-based versions.
Reports indicate that calls made via WhatsApp Web are secured with automatic end-to-end encryption using the Signal protocol, ensuring private and protected communication.
While only individual calls are supported at this stage, group calling is expected to be introduced in future updates. WhatsApp is reportedly planning to allow group calls with up to 32 participants. Additional features such as call links and scheduled calls are also likely to be rolled out gradually.
