Three Punjabi NRIs arrested for cheating an old lady
Ontario (Canada), May 7, 2021: The Regional York Police, Ontario, Canada has arrested three Punjabi NRIs for an alleged attempt to defraud an 80-year-old woman of $10,000.
The three accused have been identified as Tanveer Singh (19 years old), Ranveer Singh (19), and Chamanjyot Singh (21), all residents of Brampton.
The victim informed the police that she received a call from the police on May 3 from a suspect claiming to be a Canada Revenue Agency official. The imposter instructed to attend a bank and withdraw $10,000, in two $5000 increments and asked her to send the money by courier to a Brampton address.
She told the police that the person threatened her that she would be arrested if she didn’t send the money.
On May 4, the York Police investigators intercepted the package and monitored the delivery location in Brampton, where it was scheduled to be picked up by the suspect.
At approximately 1:20 p.m., the suspect arrived to pick up the package and he was taken into custody. Late during the investigation, it was learned that two additional suspects were involved in the crime. The other two were also arrested after their location was traced by the police.
The three have been charged by the York Police for extortion, conspiracy to commit an indictable offense, and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000. They will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on Thursday, June 10, 2021.
