Bhatinda (Punjab), March 21, 2025 – The increasing consumption of government-supplied liquor in the Bhatinda district has raised concerns among social activists and citizens.
Over the past five years, liquor sales in the district have skyrocketed by 214%, with foreign liquor sales witnessing a staggering 1008% increase.According to official data, the number of liquor outlets in Bhatinda has risen from 351 in 2020-21 to 380 in 2024-25.
The total liquor consumption in the district surged from 1.36 crore bottles in 2020-21 to 2.91 crore bottles in 2024-25, highlighting a significant rise in alcohol dependency.
Social activists argue that while the Punjab government promotes its ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign, it continues to encourage liquor sales, revealing a double standard in governance. Sadhu Ram Kusla, a social activist, called for a ban on alcohol, stating that reducing its accessibility would help build a healthier society.
Similarly, Sonu Maheshwari, President of the Youth Welfare Society, criticized the government for prioritizing liquor sales over essential services like education and healthcare. He highlighted the increasing struggles of women and families dealing with the consequences of excessive alcohol consumption.
Baga Singh, head of the Nagrik Chetna Manch, voiced concerns over the government’s focus on revenue generation through liquor sales, stating that despite social and economic damages, policies continue to favor profit over public welfare. While some citizens struggle for clean drinking water, cold beer is easily available round the clock, reflecting a grim irony in governance.
With alcohol-related social issues on the rise, activists and locals urge the government to reconsider its stance on liquor sales and prioritize the well-being of the people over revenue.
