Gurdaspur (Punjab), March 27, 2026:A large number of farmers gathered at the Regional Kisan Mela organised by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) at its Regional Research Station in Gurdaspur, turning the event into a vibrant platform for promoting sustainable agriculture and advanced farming technologies.
Held under the theme “Adopt Agricultural Diversification and Save Environmental Resources,” the mela focused on encouraging farmers to move beyond the traditional wheat–paddy cycle and adopt diversified crops such as pulses, oilseeds, fruits, and vegetables.
Experts stressed that diversification, along with efficient water management and balanced fertilizer use, is key to tackling declining soil health and groundwater depletion in Punjab.

The event witnessed participation from farmers, farm women, rural youth, and agri-entrepreneurs not only from Gurdaspur but also neighbouring districts, reflecting growing interest in climate-resilient and innovative farming practices.
Punjab’s Food and Civil Supplies Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak attended as the chief guest and lauded PAU’s contribution to agricultural research and farmer outreach. He reiterated the government’s commitment to farmer welfare and urged cultivators to adopt modern technologies and sustainable practices.
PAU Vice-Chancellor S S Gosal highlighted the urgent need to address challenges such as groundwater depletion, soil degradation, and climate change. He encouraged farmers to adopt crop diversification, integrated farming systems, and precision agriculture, while also exploring allied activities like beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, and food processing to boost income.
During the mela, experts conducted interactive technical sessions, offering practical solutions tailored to local conditions. Exhibitions showcased improved crop varieties, advanced machinery, and innovations in horticulture, beekeeping, and food processing, drawing keen interest from attendees.
The event also featured field demonstrations and agro-industrial stalls, highlighting resource-efficient technologies and value-added agricultural products. Progressive farmers and contributors to agricultural development were felicitated, adding to the significance of the programme.
