Chandigarh, April 6, 2025 – Haryana’s Energy, Transport & Labour Minister Anil Vij has made a strong appeal to sociologists, social workers, and community leaders to step forward in addressing the growing emotional distance and conflict within families and marriages.
Speaking at a cultural evening in Subhash Park, Ambala, Vij emphasized the urgent need to rebuild India’s weakening social fabric and revive meaningful community connections.
“Today, bitterness is increasing in marital and family life. Sociologists and socially aware citizens must come forward to resolve this. We must step out of our homes and eliminate these social distances,” Vij said.
Art as a Medium of Change
Praising the Kaladhara Group’s stage performance of the play "Putla", Vij underlined the power of theatre and art in reflecting and challenging social evils. He described art as a mirror to society, stating that it is essential for social change.
“The flow of art must continue. Theatre and performance are among the best ways to expose and question what is wrong in society,” he said.
In support of the cultural initiative, Vij announced ₹5 lakh from his discretionary fund for the Kaladhara Theatre & Art Group. He also committed financial assistance to upgrade the sound system at the Open Air Theatre in Subhash Park, ensuring that future events are held with improved facilities.
Revival of Community Spaces
Reflecting on the disappearing culture of joint families and shared community life, Vij lamented how modern lifestyles have created emotional isolation:
“We used to play together, talk at village chaupals, fly kites, and share meals. Now, we’re glued to screens. Our social bonds are weakening, and this is affecting not just families but the entire society,” he said.
He further pointed out the rising number of broken marriages and nuclear households, linking them to a loss of traditional values and community support systems.
New Cultural Initiatives
In a positive development for the city’s cultural scene, Vij revealed plans for a new Open Air Theatre at Shaheedi Smarak, which will have a 2,000-seat capacity and host daily sound, light, and laser shows on a lotus-shaped installation.
“Ambala is now seeing cultural events almost every week, and that was always my dream — to give the people of this city a platform to express and connect,” Vij added.
He also instructed officials to ensure no VIP sofas are placed at future events, saying even dignitaries should sit among the public to promote unity and inclusiveness.
Honouring Contributors
During the event, Minister Vij honoured members of the Kaladhara Group, performers, and local community leaders including Rotary Club President Kamalpreet Sabharwal, Khalsa School Principal KP Singh, and Sanjeev Valaya, among others, for their contributions to society and culture.
