PAU to Public and Farmers: Brace for intense heat, take care of yourself, crops and livestock
Babushahi Bureau
Ludhiana (Punjab), April 7, 2025: Weather experts of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) have warned the farmers and the public against the intense heat wave that is likely to grip North India in the coming days.
In wake of maximum and minimum temperatures being recorded above normal by about 4-5oC during the first week of April, the temperature is likely to soar high and increase by 2-4oC, observed Dr PK Kingra, Head, Department of Agricultural Meteorology and Climate Change, PAU.
“Such conditions can be more intense during coming days as India Meteorological Department has also predicted heat wave conditions at isolated places in the state in the coming days,” she disclosed.
Issuing advisory regarding crp management, Dr Kingra pointed out, “Although timely sown rabi crops have approached maturity, however, as a result of elevated heat stress due to abnormally high temperature, the late sown vegetable and fruit crops can be adversely affected by heat shocks along with increased water demand.”
Further, she emphasized on proper monitoring of the crops to check heat and water stress. “Need based light irrigation should be provided to the crops from time to time. Hot weather is also unbearable for fruit crops, so they require adequate protection. Proper moisture should be maintained by providing irrigation to avoid yield losses in orchards. Straw mulch can also be helpful to reduce the heat load on small and tender plants,” she added.
Elaborating on livestock management, Dr Kingra stressed paying attention to animals and pets also in view of heat load.
“To avoid heat stress and dehydration, keep the animals indoors with frequent water availability and a nutritious diet. Provide showers to the animals from time to time to maintain their body temperature and reduce heat stress. Coolers or fans may also be arranged for animals especially cows of exotic breeds,” she advised.
Furthermore, Dr Kingra urged the people to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak hours and keep themselves hydrated during the extremely hot weather.
