Renowned Astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar passes away at 87 in Pune

Pune (Maharashtra), May 20, 2025: Eminent astrophysicist, science communicator, and Padma Vibhushan awardee Dr. Jayant Vishnu Narlikar passed away in Pune on Tuesday at the age of 87.
According to family sources, he died peacefully in his sleep during the night and did not wake up in the morning.
Dr. Narlikar was widely regarded as one of India's foremost scientists, known for his pioneering contributions to cosmology, his efforts to popularize science among the masses, and his role in establishing key research institutions in the country.
He had recently undergone hip surgery at a hospital in Pune and was recovering at home. His passing marks the end of an era in Indian science, with tributes pouring in from the scientific community and beyond.
