Chandigarh, May 21, 2025 – A viral video from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) showcasing young women flipping their long hair as part of a ceremonial welcome for former U.S. President Donald Trump has sparked controversy and criticism from certain religious quarters.
Prominent Deobandi cleric Maulana Qari Ishaq Gora of Saharanpur voiced his objection, expressing concern over what he described as the misrepresentation of Islamic values.
“It is unfortunate that this performance is being linked to Islam,” he told a news channel. “We must always remember that Islam holds women in the highest regard. Just as something precious is kept protected, Islam commands modesty and privacy for women.”
The cleric further stated, “Labeling this act as part of Islamic tradition is deeply misleading, and we strongly condemn such a portrayal.”
The performance in question occurred during Trump’s recent visit to the UAE, where he was welcomed at the presidential palace, Qasr Al Watan, with a traditional Al-Ayyala dance.
The ceremony featured women in flowing white gowns flipping their long hair in unison with drums and chants, while men performed alongside them waving symbolic swords.
Al-Ayyala, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, is traditionally performed at celebrations and national events. It symbolizes unity, strength, and festivity through synchronized music, poetry, and movement.
While the UAE regards the performance as a proud expression of its cultural heritage, the incident has reignited debate over the intersection of modern cultural displays and religious interpretation, especially in the Islamic world.
