Chandigarh, May 22, 2025 –
Cadets at the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute (MRSAFPI), SAS Nagar, received an extraordinary dose of inspiration during a special interactive session with Amarjeet Kaur, daughter of the legendary Jemadar Nand Singh, India’s highest decorated soldier and recipient of both the Victoria Cross (VC) and Maha Vir Chakra (MVC).
Organized by the Punjab Government, the session aimed to motivate young cadets by connecting them with the heroic legacy of Jemadar Nand Singh, who exemplified unmatched courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.
Born on September 24, 1914, in Bahadurpur village (Mansa district), Nand Singh served in the 1 SIKH Battalion. He was awarded the Victoria Cross during World War II for his exceptional bravery in the Battle of Arakan, Burma, where he led a daring attack up a steep hill, neutralizing enemy positions under intense fire. Later, during the 1947-48 Kashmir War, he laid down his life while saving his comrades from an ambush, earning a posthumous Maha Vir Chakra.
Amarjeet Kaur, recounting vivid memories and lesser-known anecdotes from her father's valorous life, urged cadets to embrace discipline, courage, and a strong sense of purpose. Her emotionally powerful address evoked deep patriotism among the trainees, encouraging them to pursue excellence with unwavering dedication.
Speaking on the occasion, Major General (Retd.) Ajay H Chauhan, Director of MRSAFPI, said, “Jemadar Nand Singh’s life is a beacon of bravery and service. His double gallantry awards make him an icon for every aspiring defence personnel. His legacy is not only a source of pride for Punjab but an enduring inspiration for the entire nation.”
The event marked yet another step in the institute’s mission to cultivate a new generation of responsible, courageous, and committed officers for the Indian Armed Forces.
