Chandigarh, June 2025 – In a significant step towards combating Punjab’s deepening drug crisis, the Governor of Punjab, Gulab Chand Kataria, unveiled the official logo of the ‘Mothers Against Drugs’ campaign today at a ceremony held at Punjab Raj Bhawan.
Present at the unveiling were renowned author and founder of the campaign, Khushwant Singh and Sanna Kaushal, co-convenor and strategic lead for grassroots outreach.
Appreciating the effort, Kataria said that civil society efforts were needed to complement the efforts of the government in this massive war against drugs. He said he will be visiting some of the border districts in the coming months to address the issue.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Punjab Lit Foundation, seeks to empower mothers as the first line of defence against substance abuse through awareness, community mobilisation, and behavioral guidance.
Author and a former chief information commissioner Punjab, Khushwant Singh remarked, “This was an idea that originated from our first initiative ‘People’s Walk Against Drugs’ where women turned up in large numbers. We realized that mothers can be encouraged and trained to become the first force against drug use.”
The Mothers Against Drugs initiative was born out of Singh’s 170-kilometre grassroots walk across Punjab in 2023-24, during which hundreds of mothers voiced their anguish and desire to act. This lived experience has now translated into a formal campaign with state-wide aspirations.
“This logo isn’t just a symbol—it’s a call to action. Our experience from the People’s Walk Against Drugs made one thing clear: Punjab’s mothers are deeply distressed but equally determined. If we equip them with the right knowledge and tools, they can be the first firewall between their children and the menace of drugs. Each mother sensitised is a child saved,” said Sanna Kaushal, co-convenor of the campaign.
“This isn’t a top-down programme. We are building a mother-to-mother movement across the state. Through workshops, WhatsApp groups, anganwadi tie-ups, and online resources, we aim to make drug awareness a kitchen-table conversation. No child should fall because his mother didn’t know what signs to look for,” added Kaushal.
The Punjab Lit Foundation has already launched a full-fledged social media campaign, leveraging Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube to distribute educational videos, behavioral tips, and regional language content targeting mothers in both urban and rural areas.
The campaign has begun partnering with local NGOs, school PTAs, self-help groups, and health workers to build trusted local circles of awareness.
With the logo unveiled, the Foundation will now initiate district-level sensitisation drives, beginning with Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Bathinda, followed by a series of ‘Mothers’ Assemblies’—community-led events where mothers can learn, share, and unite in this shared cause.
The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the campaign’s ethos: Empower a mother. Save a child. Rebuild Punjab.
