New Delhi, June 8, 2025: The President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), Harmeet Singh Kalka, paid heartfelt tributes to former Union Minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, who passed away last week.
Kalka attended the bhog and antim ardaas ceremony held at Dhindsa’s native village, Ubhawal, in Sangrur district of Punjab.Remembering Dhindsa as a towering political figure, S. Kalka highlighted his long-standing contributions to the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Indian politics.
“For over two decades, Shri Dhindsa held the position of Secretary General in the Akali Dal, second only to the party president. He was a true leader of Sikhs and Punjabis, not only in India but also among the diaspora,” said Kalka.
Tracing his illustrious political journey, Kalka recalled how Dhindsa began as a village sarpanch, led the State Cooperative Bank, was elected as an independent MLA, later joined the SAD, and went on to serve as a minister in Punjab.
He eventually rose to national prominence, serving as a member of the Rajya Sabha and as a Cabinet Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government. He also shared a close camaraderie with five-time Punjab Chief Minister, the late Parkash Singh Badal.
“Dhindsa Saab was respected across party lines and maintained cordial ties with leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other political parties. He will be remembered as a statesman who strengthened a regional party by working on principles of consensus and discipline,” Kalka remarked.
Praising Dhindsa’s clarity of thought and guidance, Kalka said, “He never minced words when it came to the pride and dignity of the Akali Dal. He was a custodian of Sikh and Akali values and always spoke the truth, no matter how hard it was.”
Kalka extended his heartfelt condolences to S. Parminder Singh Dhindsa, former Punjab Finance Minister and son of the late leader, and other members of the bereaved family.
