Nangal Municipal Council recommends tax on Himachal vehicles amid entry fee row
Babushahi Bureau
Nangal (Punjab), June 11, 2025: In a strong response to the ongoing entry tax issue, the Nangal Municipal Council has passed a proposal recommending the imposition of a tax on all vehicles entering Nangal from Himachal Pradesh.
The move comes after repeated complaints about the unilateral collection of entry fees by the Himachal government on vehicles from Punjab. The proposal was passed as a table item during a council meeting held on Monday, chaired by Municipal Council President Sanjay Sahni.
A Countermeasure Against Himachal's Tax
Speaking after the meeting, Congress councilor spokesperson Advocate Paramjit Singh Pamma stated that Himachal's tax policy is negatively affecting residents of Nangal and surrounding areas.
He pointed out that people are forced to pay hefty fees immediately upon entering Himachal, a practice that violates guidelines set by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Central Government.
Demand for Government Intervention
The council’s resolution urges the Punjab and Central Governments to instruct the Himachal Pradesh government to immediately stop this entry tax.Failing that, Nangal Municipal Council warns it will be forced to implement a counter tax on Himachal-registered vehicles entering its jurisdiction.
The matter has sparked regional tension and could potentially escalate unless higher authorities intervene to resolve the dispute in accordance with national transportation policies.
