Couple dies in house fire while asleep, 7-year-old son survives

Barnala (Punjab), July 1, 2025: A horrifying fire broke out late last night in village Moom, located in Punjab’s Barnala district, claiming the lives of a husband and wife while they were asleep.
The victims were identified as 49-year-old Jagrup Singh and his wife Angrez Kaur.
According to reports, the fire erupted suddenly while the family was asleep.The blaze spread rapidly, engulfing the couple’s room. Jagrup Singh died on the spot, while his wife suffered critical burn injuries.
She was rushed to Civil Hospital Barnala and later referred to Faridkot due to her deteriorating condition, but unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries on the way.Initial suspicions suggest the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, though police are still investigating the exact cause.
The fire came to light when a young man sleeping on a nearby rooftop woke up due to rainfall and noticed smoke coming from the house. He immediately raised an alarm, and villagers gathered at the scene.
In a heartbreaking detail, the couple’s 7-year-old son survived the tragedy as he was staying at his uncle’s house that night. Jagrup Singh, who was physically disabled in one hand, belonged to a financially weak, labor-class family. The sudden loss has left the entire village in deep mourning.
SHO Karamjit Kaur of Mehal Kalan police station stated that a thorough investigation is underway. Statements from family members have been recorded, and the exact cause of the fire will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
Villagers have expressed grief and are coming forward to support the bereaved family during this devastating time.
