Second consecutive security breach at Ferozepur Jail; Mobiles, SIM Seized
Ferozepur, July 1, 2025: In yet another breach of jail security, five mobile phones and a SIM card were recovered from Ferozepur Central Jail on July 1, marking the second consecutive day of contraband recovery.
According to jail authorities, the items were seized, during the search operation, from under-trial prisoners Harjinder Singh, Sonu, Manish Kumar, Sunil Singh alias Lovely, Jaskaran Singh, and one unidentified inmate. A case has been registered under Section 52-A of the Prisons Act.
This recovery follows the June 30 incident when six mobile phones, six bidis, and a packet of zarda were confiscated from six other under-trial prisoners. The back-to-back discoveries point to a worrying lapse in jail security protocols.
Mobile phones continue to be the most sought-after contraband inside the jail, often used by inmates to stay in touch with the outside world for personal or illegal activities—thus undermining the very purpose of incarceration, whether as punishment or during the trial process.
The growing number of such incidents has raised serious concerns. Between January and June 2025 alone, a total of 294 mobile phones have been confiscated, with 26 of them recovered in June, including this latest seizure. In comparison, 510 mobile phones were seized throughout the entire year of 2024, along with several other prohibited items.
There is an urgent need to tighten security arrangements, particularly at entry checkpoints, during inmate visitation hours, and upon prisoners' return from parole.
An investigation into the matter is currently underway, led by Investigating Officer Gurdeep Singh
