Pandoh-Bhakhra Dam Alert: All gates opened, 44,000 cusecs water released into Beas; flood threat looms over Punjab
By Shashibhushan Purohit
Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), July 1, 2025: In a critical monsoon development, all five spillway gates of the Pandoh Dam in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district have been opened.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) initiated this step as part of the flushing operation of the Larji Dam, releasing a massive 44,000 cusecs of water per second into the Beas River, sharply raising its water level. This move, coupled with the rising water levels at Bhakra Dam, has escalated flood risks in parts of Himachal Pradesh and downstream Punjab.
Silt Build-up Triggers Emergency Flushing
Heavy silt and sediment accumulation during the monsoon is cited as the reason for the flushing operation. Officials revealed that the silt content has reached 4000 PPM, which is considered dangerously high. As a result, the inflow and outflow at Pandoh are being maintained at a matching 44,000 cusecs.
Power Production Halted at Dehar Power House
BBMB has temporarily stopped the water flow through the Baggi Tunnel, halting power generation at the Dehar Hydropower Plant for at least 24 hours. This may cause local power shortages in the region.
Authorities Issue Flood Warnings
The BBMB and local administration have warned residents and tourists to avoid the banks of the Beas River, as water levels are rising rapidly. Livestock owners have also been advised not to take their animals near the river.
The Larji Dam flushing operation is still ongoing, which could further elevate water levels in the Beas River. The Jyunni Khad, a stream near Pandoh, is also in spate and now threatening to breach into the Beas River’s main flow, increasing the flood risk.
