Breaking: Water level rises in Bhakra dam, DC imposed strict ban on river, canal activities

Rupnagar (Punjab), July 1, 2025: With water levels rising rapidly in the Bhakra Dam due to heavy rainfall in the hills, District Magistrate Varjit Walia has imposed strict prohibitory orders across the Rupnagar district, banning the public from entering or roaming near the Sutlej River, canals, streams, and other water bodies.
The official order, issued under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), prohibits both swimming/bathing and recreational movement along riverbanks until August 30, 2025.
Ban Aimed at Preventing Drownings Due to Sudden Water Surges
Explaining the decision, DC Varjit Walia stated that with monsoon season in full swing, many children and residents attempt to escape the heat by swimming in nearby rivers and canals. However, ongoing heavy rainfall in hilly regions has significantly increased inflow into Bhakra Dam.
As a result, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) may release water into the Sutlej River and associated canals without prior public notice. This can cause a sudden and dangerous rise in water levels, posing a major threat to unsuspecting individuals.
Many people are also unaware of the depth or force of flowing water, increasing the risk of drowning incidents, Walia added.
Public Prohibited from All Water-Body Activity in Rupnagar Till August 30
The ban is effective immediately and applies to all citizens, especially children, across all rivers, canals, and streams in the district. Violations will invite strict legal action.
Authorities have appealed to the public to strictly follow the directives and avoid water bodies during this period for their own safety.
