Ferozepur, July 7, 2025: On the occasion of World Zoonoses Day, an awareness meeting was organised to educate people about diseases that spread from animals to humans. The meeting was held under the leadership of Civil Surgeon Ferozepur, Dr. Rajwinder Kaur, at the BDPO office with newly elected sarpanches and panches in attendance. Addressing the meeting, District Mass Media Officer Sanjeev Sharma informed that awareness seminars are being conducted across the district to sensitize the public about zoonotic diseases. These diseases can spread through animal bites or by coming into contact with the bodily fluids of infected animals.
Highlighting the causes of transmission, he mentioned that viruses, bacteria, fungi, prions, or parasites from animals can enter the human body, leading to various illnesses. Some common zoonotic diseases include rabies, influenza, brucellosis, plague, tuberculosis, ringworm, swine flu, bird flu, Ebola, diphtheria, tapeworm, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and rickettsiosis, which pose serious threats to human health.
Dy MMO, Ankush Bhandari emphasised the importance of taking preventive measures such as maintaining proper health care for animals, ensuring timely veterinary check-ups, and vaccination of pets. He also stressed the need for proper disposal of animal waste and isolating sick animals from healthy ones. He also advised residents to take effective measures to control pests like rats, lizards, and frogs within households and to thoroughly cook animal-based food products such as milk, eggs, and meat before consumption.
