Jaipur (Rajasthan), July 27, 2025: A Sikh student from Tarn Taran district, Gurpreet Kaur, was reportedly denied entry to a judicial examination centre in Jaipur, Rajasthan, for wearing her religious articles of faith — the Kara (iron bracelet) and Kirpan (ceremonial sword).
Exam officials allegedly asked her to remove the symbols before entering the venue.Choosing to uphold her religious beliefs, Gurpreet refused to compromise and did not appear for the exam.
The incident has sparked sharp criticism from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). SGPC member Gurcharan Singh Grewal strongly condemned the act, stating,
“Such incidents have a deep psychological impact on Sikh students. Attacks on the Sikh identity and faith are unacceptable.”
He further criticized the authorities for failing to respect constitutionally protected religious freedoms and announced that SGPC will raise the matter at a larger level to seek justice and accountability.
Grewal also issued an appeal to the Sikh community worldwide, urging them to come together and protest such violations of religious rights.“We must raise a united voice to protect our spiritual and constitutional rights,” he said.
This is not an isolated incident. Similar cases involving discrimination against Sikh students for wearing articles of faith have emerged in the past, raising serious concerns about religious freedom and institutional sensitivity in public spaces and competitive exams.
The SGPC has reiterated its demand for strict guidelines to ensure respect for Sikh religious symbols in all government and educational institutions across India.
