Kapurthala (Punjab), July 27, 2025: Congress MLA from Kapurthala and former minister Rana Gurjeet Singh in a statement issued here today said that until farmers in Punjab are transformed into entrepreneurs, it will be impossible to stabilize and strengthen their economic condition.
“Punjab’s economy also depends on good financial condition of the state’s agrarian community, so it becomes mandatory to pull up farmers’ financial condition,” said the law maker.
Rana Gurjeet Singh appealed to both the Punjab government and the central government not to limit farmers to agriculture alone but to expand their economic vision, so that Punjab can once again move towards prosperity with a special focus on food processing and value addition. The government should impart training to the farmers to add value to the food grain and other crop he grows.
According to the member of legislative assembly merely increasing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) is not enough for the welfare of farmers, as MSP alone cannot cover the rising costs of agriculture, such as machinery, seeds, fertilizers, and water.
All these essential inputs are becoming increasingly expensive, resulting in decreasing income for farmers and rising debt levels.
The land holdings in the agrarian families have been subject of division and wit the passage of time due to shrinking farm sizes majority of farmers are restrained to make farm income sustain their daily life, said Rana Gurjeet Singh who said that he has also sent a written request to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the development of a strategic plan to steer Punjab's farmers toward industrial and commercial thinking.
He mentioned that he has consistently raised this demand across different political regimes and has been actively working to improve the condition of farmers, while emphasizing the need to equip Punjab's farmers with skills not only in production but also in handling, storage, processing, and marketing, so they can deliver their products directly to the market and command better prices.
