Chandigarh, September 24, 2025: In a remarkable achievement for Indian mountaineering, Chandigarh’s professional climber, Vishal Thakur, and his team successfully scaled Mount Manirang (6,593 metres / 21,630 feet), Himachal Pradesh’s eighth-highest peak, on September 20 and proudly hoisted the Indian tricolour at the summit.
The four-member team—comprising Thakur, Aman Chauhan, Brij Mohan Kewla, and Teja Singh—completed the challenging expedition in alpine style within just six days. The climbers carried all their gear, food, and equipment themselves, without relying on porters, guides, cooks, or animals, making the ascent a true test of endurance and skill.
Thakur shared that an earlier attempt in August had to be abandoned due to inclement weather, but the fresh attempt with a new team turned into a triumph. “Manirang was not just a mountain for us, it was a test of courage and patience. Conquering it in alpine style without external support is a moment of pride for me and my team,” he said.
Mount Manirang, located on the border of Kinnaur and Lahaul–Spiti districts, is renowned as one of the most technically demanding peaks in the Himalayas. The successful ascent has been hailed as an inspiring milestone, particularly for the country’s youth.
Vishal Thakur has earlier scaled several difficult peaks, including Black Peak in Uttarakhand, Kalindi Khal, Friendship Peak, Pin Parvati Pass, Yunam Peak, and Kanamo Peak. His next target is Reo Purgyil, the highest peak in Himachal Pradesh.
