Chandigarh: PGI shines at National Health Research Summit, bags multiple top honours

Chandigarh, November 18, 2025: The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) has reaffirmed its status as a national leader in medical science, securing several prestigious awards at the 2nd DHR-ICMR Health Research Excellence Summit 2025.
The event, organised by the Department of Health Research (DHR) and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to mark ICMR’s 114th foundation day, honoured outstanding contributions to health research and innovation across the country.
For the second year in a row, PGI received the ‘Institutional Excellence Recognition: Extramural Institute – Overall PE’ award, highlighting its strong performance in research and innovation.
The honour was accepted by PGI’s dean (research), Sanjay Jain, who received the award from Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, and Prof Vinod Paul, Member, NITI Aayog.
The institute also stood out in the innovation category. Dr Varinder Garg was awarded the ‘Innovation Excellence Recognition: Patent – Extramural’ for his groundbreaking work on a quantitative sensory testing system, developed in partnership with Panjab University.
Adding to PGI’s achievements, Dr Madhumita Premkumar from the Department of Hepatology earned the national ‘Publication (Public Health/Clinical) – Extramural’ award. She was recognised for her influential research publication on Hepatitis C, underscoring PGI’s continued impact on critical public health issues.
