Punjab SC Commission orders probe after alleged denial of mortuary services to Dalit youth

Chandigarh, November 18, 2025: The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission, under Chairman S. Jasvir Singh Garhi, has taken suo-moto cognizance of a disturbing incident reported in the media, alleging that the body of a Dalit youth was refused entry into a mortuary.
The Chairman has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Rupnagar to conduct an immediate inquiry and submit a detailed report.
He stressed that any form of discrimination, negligence, or inhumane treatment towards Scheduled Castes will not be tolerated, and the Commission prioritizes prompt action and justice.
The SDM and Civil Surgeon of Rupnagar have been ordered to personally appear before the Commission on November 19 to present a full action-taken report. In a related development, Chairman Garhi has also sought a detailed status update on the ₹25 crore funds allocated for the Sri Guru Ravidas Study Centre.
The Deputy Commissioner of Jalandhar has been instructed to provide all relevant records and progress reports via the concerned ADC, who must personally appear before the Commission on November 26 at 11:30 AM.
