Haryana sets ambitious sex ratio target, suspends health officers for negligence
Babushahi Bureau
Chandigarh, November 18, 2025: Haryana has set a state-wide target to raise its sex ratio to 920 this year, with the government taking strict measures to ensure accountability. Additional Chief Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Sh. Sudhir Rajpal, directed district administrations and health officers to work in close coordination and intensify efforts to achieve this goal.
During a video conference with Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from the six lowest-performing districts — Sirsa, Sonipat, Yamunanagar, Charkhi Dadri, Nuh, and Jhajjar — Rajpal instructed officials to proactively improve the sex ratio in collaboration with civil surgeons. Reverse tracking of illegal abortion cases and mandatory registration of all newborns, particularly in urban slum clusters, were emphasized as key steps.
Taking serious action against negligence, he ordered the suspension of the Medical Officer of PHC Jattanwali in Sirsa and the SMO of Halalpur in Sonipat. Rajpal highlighted that the declining figures necessitate strict monitoring, with CDRs of individuals involved in illegal MTPs and sex-determination activities to be submitted as evidence in courts.
To strengthen enforcement, the state has decided to develop an MIS portal to track all PNDT-related court cases and is exploring the attachment of specialised lawyers at the state headquarters to improve conviction rates. He also directed civil surgeons to prepare detailed line-lists of clinics, nursing homes, and hospitals, ensuring gynaecologists comply with legal limits on the number of centres where abortions can be performed.
Dr. Manish Bansal, Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Dr. Virender Yadav, Dr. Simmi Verma, Dr. Mukta Kumar, and other senior health officials attended the meeting.
