Major Protest Across Punjab: Farmers block railway tracks in statewide Rail Roko’ stir
Babushahi Bureau
Chandigarh, December 5, 2025: A major protest erupted across Punjab on Friday as farmers blocked railway tracks at multiple locations, bringing train movement to a halt. Farmers sat on tracks across the state as part of a two-hour ‘Rail Roko’ agitation, demanding action on several key issues affecting the farming community.
The protest follows the announcement made earlier by farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, who had declared that farmers would halt train services on December 5 in support of their demands.
According to the Kisan-Mazdoor Morcha, the agitation is aimed at protesting against the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025, the alleged move to sell government land, and issues related to the Shambhu-Khannauri movement.
The organisations said preparations are underway for stronger and permanent protests against both the Punjab and Central governments. Farmer leaders highlighted that the Electricity Amendment Bill 2025 remains one of the central reasons behind today’s Rail Roko protest.
More Protests Planned in December
Speaking to the media, leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher and Manjit Singh Rai said that protests will intensify in the coming weeks. They announced:
- December 10: Protest against prepaid smart meters
- December 17–18: Sit-in demonstrations outside all DC offices
- December 19: Full-scale Rail Roko protest if demands remain unaddressed
The leaders said these steps are necessary as the major concerns of Punjab’s farmers and common citizens are being ignored.
Expressing anger at the Punjab government, farmers also raised the issue of pending sugarcane payments. They demanded that the state government ensure the release of dues immediately and fix the sugarcane rate at ₹500 per quintal.
Farmers warned that if the government fails to take timely action, they will be forced to intensify their agitation further.
