Chandigarh, December 30, 2025: As Punjab sees another special session of the Legislative Assembly on Monday, Punjab BJP President Sunil Jakhar questioned the purpose and outcomes of such sessions, asking what real benefit they bring to the people of the state.
In a statement, Jakhar said that instead of convening special sessions, the Bhagwant Mann-led government should focus on discussing the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab. “Only when there is peace and stability in the state can people work and livelihoods improve,” he said.
Raising concerns over alleged corruption in the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), Jakhar asked why the state government has not ordered an inquiry into the matter. He alleged that the delay was aimed at protecting ministers and their aides, and demanded that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann clarify the government’s stand on the issue on the floor of the Assembly.
Jakhar further said that the special session also presents an opportunity for the state government to demonstrate its commitment to the poor. Referring to the government’s repeated claims of a “full treasury,” he urged it to provide 125 days of employment under NREGA instead of the existing 100 days.
He also called on the Punjab government to pass a resolution in the Assembly thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for enabling such an increase by making the necessary amendments to the law, stating that this would reflect genuine concern for the welfare of the state’s poorest sections.
