Air India Pilot held at Vancouver Airport over alcohol smell
Babushahi Bureau
Vancouver (Canada), January 1, 2025: An Air India pilot was detained at Vancouver International Airport last week after Canadian authorities flagged concerns over his fitness to operate a scheduled Delhi-bound flight, leading to a delay in departure.
The incident occurred on December 23, just days before Christmas. According to reports, airport officials were alerted by staff at a duty-free outlet who either observed the pilot consuming alcohol or detected the smell of alcohol while he was making a purchase at the store.
Following the alert, Canadian authorities subjected the pilot to a breath analyser test, which he reportedly failed. He was subsequently detained, and the flight was held back as a result.
In a brief statement, Air India confirmed the incident, stating that the pilot was detained after authorities raised concerns regarding his “fitness for duty.” The airline did not disclose further details, including any disciplinary action taken, but reiterated its commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
