Bathinda (Punjab, January 17, 2026): A tragic road accident on the National Highway in Bathinda claimed the lives of five people on Saturday, sending shockwaves across the region. All the victims were travelling in a car and were residents of Gujarat who had come to Punjab as tourists.
According to preliminary information, the car was passing through the Bathinda National Highway when it suddenly rammed into the central divider. The impact was severe, causing the vehicle to overturn multiple times and suffer extensive damage, leaving all five occupants dead on the spot.
Initial investigations suggest that dense fog and possible driver distraction due to a route diversion or closed stretch of the highway may have contributed to the accident. Police are also examining whether overspeeding played a role.
Media reports indicate that a woman police employee from the Gujarat Police is among the deceased. The identities of the victims are being verified.
The bodies were retrieved from the mangled vehicle and shifted to the mortuary at AIIMS Bathinda. The families of the deceased have been informed, and post-mortem examinations will be conducted after their arrival and formal identification.
Police have initiated an investigation from multiple angles to ascertain the exact cause of the accident. Meanwhile, in view of the prevailing foggy conditions, the district administration has urged motorists to drive cautiously, maintain low speeds and use fog lights while travelling on highways to prevent such tragic incidents.
