Punjab Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan has addressed a letter to the Central Government, raising concerns about the deteriorating condition of the Giani Zail Singh Sandhwan Railway Station.
Kultar Singh Sandhwa stated that this station has been dedicated to the memory of the late Giani Zail Singh, a former President of India, as a tribute to his significant contributions to the country. He also mentioned, with due humility, that despite its historical and emotional importance, the station remains largely overlooked when it comes to passenger amenities.
The Speaker further writes that it is important to bring to your attention that a proper standard platform has yet to be built at this station. The current platform floor is approximately nine inches lower than the third step of the passenger coaches, posing significant inconvenience and safety risks, especially for elderly passengers, women, and children.
It is also noted that approximately 14 trains pass through this prominent station daily, yet only daytime passenger trains are designated to stop here. Consequently, passengers from Sandhwa and nearby villages are forced to travel to Kotkapura or Faridkot Railway Stations to board trains, leading to unnecessary inconvenience, particularly during nighttime.
The Speaker further states that, in the broader public interest and to honor the dignity associated with the name of the late Giani Zail Singh, appropriate instructions should be issued to the relevant authorities for constructing a proper platform at Giani Zail Singh Sandhwa Railway Station in accordance with prescribed railway standards.
Additionally, arrangements should be made to include stoppages for Mail/Express trains at this station to better serve the travelling public.
