Chief Economic Advisor bats for social media curbs for kids, calls compulsive scrolling a silent scourge

New Delhi, January 30, 2026: Chief Economic Advisor of Government of India V Anantha Nageswararn has advocated social media curbs for kids calling compulsive scrolling a silent scourge.
He supported moves by Andhra Pradesh and Goa governments for imposing curbs on use of social media by children below 16 years of age. He said that compulsive scrolling and social comparison are linked to anxiety and depressive symptoms. He also flagged obesity as a threat to India’s demographic dividend and urged private industry to adopt clearer food labelling practices.
