Gurdaspur (Punjab), February 28, 2026: The Jamhoori Adhikar Sabha Punjab has demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court into the alleged fake encounter of 19-year-old Ranjit Singh of village Aandiyan, terming the incident a “state-sponsored organised killing.”
The demand comes in the wake of the killing of two police personnel posted at the Aandiyan police post and the subsequent custodial death of Ranjit Singh, who was accused in the case.
Addressing the media, Sabha president Professor Jagmohan Singh, General Secretary Pritpal Singh and Press Secretary Amarjeet Shastri stated that Ranjit Singh was arrested from his residence on February 23 in the presence of village elders on charges related to the murder of two police personnel. He was taken to Dorangla police station. The following morning, police claimed he was killed in an encounter.
The Sabha, however, has questioned the official version. A fact-finding committee led by district president Dr Jagjeevan Lal was constituted to investigate the matter. The committee has been in contact with the victim’s family and local residents.
According to preliminary findings shared by the committee, the murder of the two police personnel remains a “mysterious case.” The report suggests that in an apparent attempt to quickly solve the case, police named Inderjit Singh and Ranjit Singh of village Aandiyan, along with Dilawar Singh of nearby village Ali Nangal, as accused. However, family members and villagers have denied their involvement in the crime.
The Sabha strongly condemned what it described as a “fake encounter” and expressed solidarity with the bereaved family. It reiterated the demand for a high-level judicial probe to ensure transparency and accountability.
While condemning the killing of innocent police personnel, the organisation also emphasised the need to expose the forces behind such crimes. It called for the creation of employment opportunities for youth in border villages and opposed what it termed as the harassment of ordinary citizens in the name of security.
The fact-finding committee has stated that a detailed report on the matter will be released soon. Among those present during the visit were committee members Ranjit Singh Dhaliwal, Harbhajan Singh Mangat, Kirti Kisan Union state vice-president Comrade Satbir Singh Sultani, and Amar Kranti state press secretary Channan Singh Dorangla.
