Govt. College of Education, Chandigarh hosts national seminar on universal human values

Chandigarh, March 6, 2026: A national seminar on “Fostering Universal Human Values: Building a Compassionate, Inclusive and Sustainable Society” was organized at Govt. College of Education, Sector 20-D, Chandigarh under IQAC and UHV Cell sponsored by the College Development Council (CDC), Panjab University, Chandigarh.
The seminar aimed to promote ethical values, compassion, inclusivity and sustainability in education and society by bringing together more than 85 academicians, administrators and experts to deliberate on the role of Universal Human Values (UHV) in building a responsible and harmonious society.

The seminar commenced with the Inaugural Session, which began with the college anthem and lamp-lighting ceremony. Mrs. Prerna Puri, IAS, Education Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. In her address, Ms. Prerna Puri emphasized the pivotal role of teachers in shaping society. She stated that teachers are the true inspiration for students and must guide them with patience and dedication.
Narrating the story of a saint and a scorpion, she explained that teachers must continue helping and guiding students regardless of their behaviour. She appreciated the relevance of the seminar theme and encouraged educators to consistently strive for the holistic development of every learner.
Prof. Ravi Inder Singh, Dean, College Development Council, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was present as the Guest of Honour.
He emphasized the importance of mentorship and institutional support in helping students realize their potential.
The Keynote Address was delivered by Swami Bhitiharanandaji Maharaj, Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, Chandigarh, who shared valuable insights on the significance of universal human values in nurturing a compassionate and harmonious society. Referring to the teachings of Sri Aurobindo, he emphasized that value-based education is essential for building a compassionate and harmonious society
The seminar comprised four technical sessions addressing different dimensions of universal human values. Technical Session I was chaired by Prof. P.K. Singla, NITTR focused on “Significance of Ethics and Values – NEP 2020”, highlighting the importance of value-based education, curriculum reforms and ethical research practices in accordance with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020.Technical Session II headed by Dr. Garima Joshi, UIET deliberated on “Understanding Human Brain Physiology in line with UHV Proposals”, emphasizing the integration of ethical values with scientific understanding of human behaviour and the role of literacy, arts, media, compassion and empathy in bringing about positive social transformation. Technical Session III addressed by Dr. Manisha Gupta on “Addressing SDGs through Empowered and Value-Driven Youth and the Role of UHV”, focusing on the contribution of universal human values in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and promoting diversity, equity and sustainable living practices among youth. Lastly, Technical Session IV chaired by Prof. Dinesh Chahal deliberated on “Ethics and Values in Public Administration and Governance”, highlighting the importance of value-based leadership, transparency and accountability in governance, and the role of education in fostering responsible citizenship and community development.
The seminar concluded with the Valedictory Session, where Prof. Shankar Sehgal, Coordinator, UHV Cell, Panjab University, Chandigarh, delivered the Valedictory Address. Formal vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Dean of the college to the Chief Guest, Resource persons and delegates for their graceful presence and making this seminar a huge success. The seminar was organized under the able guidance of Dr. Sapna Nanda, Principal of the college (Patron) by Dr. A.K. Srivastava, Dean (Convenor), IQAC, Seminar and UHV Committee-Dr. Lilu Ram and Dr. Vadana Aggarwal, Dr. Anjali Puri, Dr. Ravneet Chawla, Dr. Sheojee Singh and Dr. Nisha Singh.
