New Delhi, March 22, 2026 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a new benchmark in Indian politics by becoming the longest-serving head of an elected government in the country.
With a combined tenure of 8,931 days as Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister, Modi has overtaken Pawan Kumar Chamling, who previously held the record with 8,930 days in office as Sikkim’s Chief Minister.
The milestone marks nearly 25 years of continuous leadership, highlighting an extended period of political influence at both the state and national levels.
Modi’s political journey began when he took office as Gujarat’s Chief Minister in October 2001, a position he held for over 13 years before transitioning to national leadership. In May 2014, he was sworn in as India’s 14th Prime Minister, becoming the first non-Congress leader to secure a full majority in the Lok Sabha.
He has since maintained a strong electoral record, leading his party to victories in three consecutive general elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024. He is also the first Prime Minister born after India’s Independence and among the few leaders to return for a third consecutive term.
Over the years, Modi has accumulated several distinctions, including being the longest-serving Chief Minister of Gujarat and the Prime Minister with the most extensive prior experience as a state leader.
The latest milestone adds to his long list of political achievements, reinforcing his position as one of the most enduring leaders in India’s democratic history.
