Workshop on 'Mathematical Modelling and Cellular Automata' held at SBS State University
Ferozepur, March 29, 2026: The Department of Applied Sciences at Shaheed Bhagat Singh State University, Ferozepur, organised a special workshop on the topic “Simulation of Real-World Phenomena Using Mathematical Models and Cellular Automata.” A large number of B.Tech and B.Sc students actively participated in the event.
In his message, Vice-Chancellor Dr Suresh Kumar Sharma emphasised the importance of such academic initiatives and encouraged students to adopt innovative thinking and engage in research-oriented activities.
The workshop featured Dr Arvind Kumar Gupta, Professor from IIT Ropar, as the key resource person. He provided in-depth insights into mathematical models and cellular automata, highlighting their applications in real-world scenarios such as biological patterns and traffic flow. The workshop aimed to familiarise students with fundamental concepts of mathematical modelling and inspire them to address complex real-life challenges.
Registrar Dr Gazalpreet Singh also motivated students to actively participate in such academic events. Dr Kulbhushan Agnihotri from Panjab University, Chandigarh, attended as a special guest.
The workshop was successfully conducted under the guidance of Dr Kiranjeet Kaur, Head of the Department of Applied Sciences and Humanities. Dr. Rakesh Kumar (Convener) and Dr K. Sunil Bahl (Co-Convener) played key roles in organising the event, while student coordinator Rajneesh Kumar Sharma ensured its smooth execution. Multiple sessions on mathematical modelling and cellular automata were conducted to enhance students’ understanding.
Dr Pratibha Narang efficiently conducted the proceedings of the event. An interactive question-and-answer session was also held, where students actively engaged with the speaker. Dr Gupta appreciated the curiosity shown by students and encouraged them to pursue careers in scientific research.
The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Rakesh Kumar, who expressed gratitude to the resource person, faculty members, staff, and students. Dr. Arvind Kumar Gupta was also honoured with a memento of Shaheed Bhagat Singh as a token of appreciation. Participants described the workshop as highly informative and beneficial.
