Rupee hits all-time low, breaches 95 mark against US dollar

Mumbai (Maharashtra), March 30, 2026: The Indian rupee gave up early gains and slipped to a record intra-day low of 95.22 against the US dollar on Monday, weighed down by rising crude oil prices, global geopolitical tensions, and continued strength in the American currency.
The rupee had opened on a positive note at 93.62 in the interbank foreign exchange market and briefly strengthened to 93.57, gaining over one rupee from its previous close. The initial optimism followed a move by the Reserve Bank of India to reduce the net open position limit for banks to $100 million overnight.
However, the momentum was short-lived as sustained pressure in global markets pushed the currency sharply lower during the day. The rupee eventually dropped 160 paise from its opening level to touch the historic low of 95.22.
The decline comes after a steep fall on Friday as well, when the rupee had weakened by 89 paise to close at a then record low of 94.85 against the US dollar.
