Storm Alert for Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Himachal as rain, hail threat looms

Chandigarh, April 3, 2026: A spell of volatile weather is set to impact Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorms, gusty winds and possible hailstorms over the coming days.
According to the IMD, two successive western disturbances will influence northwest India, with peak activity expected on April 3–4 and another round around April 7. Under their impact, the region is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning activity.
Hailstorm activity is likely at isolated places across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, particularly on April 3 and 4. Gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph, with speeds potentially touching 60 kmph, are expected during this period.
The IMD has also warned of thundersquall conditions, with wind speeds possibly hitting 60–70 kmph in parts of the region, posing risks of tree uprooting, damage to standing crops, and disruptions to power and communication lines.
A fresh spell of rain and thunderstorms is likely to return on April 7–8, prolonging the unsettled weather conditions across the northern states.Meanwhile, day temperatures are expected to dip by 3–5 degrees Celsius, remaining near to below normal, offering temporary relief from the prevailing heat.
Authorities have advised residents to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during adverse weather, and remain indoors during lightning or strong winds. Farmers have also been urged to take precautionary measures to protect crops from potential hail damage.
