Moga (Punjab), April 4, 2026:A standoff between the Punjab government and striking commission agents (arhtiyas) has intensified during the ongoing wheat procurement season, with a crucial meeting now scheduled for April 6 between Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and arhtiya unions.
The development comes after CM Mann’s sharp remarks accusing some arhtiyas of attempting to “blackmail” the government, triggering strong reactions from the union. In response, arhtiyas have decided to hold a key meeting with the Chief Minister to press their demands, including commission-related issues.
Taking a tough stand, CM Mann warned that attempts to pressure the government will not be tolerated. He also announced that arhtiyas who do not join the strike and cooperate with the government will be given priority in the allotment of storage (cellars).
The government further stated that if arhtiyas fail to cooperate, procurement through cooperative societies will be expanded to ensure farmers do not face any disruption.
The Chief Minister assured farmers that every grain of wheat will be procured and the procurement process will continue smoothly.
Following these developments, activity within arhtiya unions has intensified, with leaders preparing to present their demands and concerns in the upcoming meeting.
All eyes are now on the April 6 talks, which are expected to determine whether the impasse will be resolved or escalate further, potentially impacting the procurement season in the state.
