Prominent BJP leader and former OSD to the Chief Minister, Onkar Singh Sidhu, recently met the Governor of Punjab, Gulab Chand Kataria, and submitted a detailed memorandum highlighting a wide range of pressing issues and concerns pertaining to the Dhuri Vidhan Sabha constituency.
The meeting was held with the objective of drawing the Governor’s attention towards the urgent developmental needs of the region and seeking timely intervention at the appropriate levels.
During the interaction, Onkar Singh Sidhu elaborated on the growing civic challenges being faced by residents of Dhuri, particularly the increasing traffic congestion in the city. He emphasized that with the expansion of population and vehicular load, the existing road infrastructure has become insufficient.
In this regard, he strongly demanded the construction of three under-bridges at key locations in Dhuri, stating that such infrastructure would significantly ease traffic flow, reduce travel time, and enhance road safety for commuters. He added that these under-bridges are not just a convenience but a necessity for the smooth functioning of daily life and local commerce.
Apart from infrastructure concerns, Sidhu also highlighted the alarming issue of depleting groundwater levels in the region. He pointed out that Dhuri and its surrounding areas have been declared a “dark zone” due to excessive extraction of groundwater and inadequate recharge.
Expressing serious concern, he stated that this situation poses a long-term threat to agriculture, drinking water availability, and overall environmental sustainability. He stressed the need for immediate and effective measures to address this crisis before it worsens further.
In his memorandum, Sidhu urged the Governor to facilitate the implementation of suitable schemes and interventions from the Central Government to tackle these challenges. He specifically called for the adoption of water conservation initiatives, groundwater recharge projects, and modern irrigation techniques under various central schemes.
Additionally, he requested that special attention be given to Dhuri in terms of infrastructure development funding and urban planning support.
Sidhu further expressed hope that with the Governor’s support and intervention, these issues would be taken up with the concerned authorities on priority. He reiterated his commitment to raising the voice of the people of Dhuri and ensuring that their genuine concerns are addressed effectively.
