BJP sweeps 3 of 5 States, scripts historic win in West Bengal; NDA retains stronghold in Assam & Puducherry

New Delhi, May 4, 2026India’s 2026: Assembly elections delivered a politically defining verdict across several states, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registering a historic breakthrough in West Bengal, while its allies and rival formations secured decisive mandates in other regions.
West Bengal: BJP ends 15-year TMC rule
In a landmark outcome, the BJP has secured a majority in the 294-member West Bengal Assembly, crossing the halfway mark of 148 seats and effectively ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Out of 293 declared seats, the BJP has won 154 seats, while the TMC has secured 54 seats. Congress and the Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) have won 2 seats each, while the CPI(M) has taken 1 seat. Trends for the remaining seats show BJP maintaining a strong lead.
The result marks the first BJP-led government in West Bengal since Independence. Senior BJP leaders, including Suvendu Adhikari, are reported to be ahead in key constituencies such as Bhabanipur and Nandigram, while several TMC stalwarts faced setbacks.
Assam: NDA secures third straight term
In Assam, the BJP-led NDA has secured a third consecutive term, consolidating its dominance in the state.
Of the 119 seats declared, the BJP has won 81 seats, while allies AGP and BPF have secured 9 and 10 seats respectively. Congress has won 14 seats, while AIUDF and Raijor Dal have secured 2 seats each. Remaining trends indicate continued BJP-led alliance dominance.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma won from Jalukbari, while BJP leader Hitendra Nath Goswami defeated Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi in Jorhat.
Kerala: UDF registers sweeping victory
In Kerala, the United Democratic Front (UDF) led by Congress has registered a decisive win.
The Congress won 63 seats, while its ally IUML secured 22 seats, giving the alliance a strong majority. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan lost in Dharmadam, while BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar won in Nemom.
Puducherry: NDA set for return
In Puducherry’s 30-member Assembly, the NDA is set to form government with 18 seats, comfortably crossing the majority mark.
The All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) won 12 seats, BJP secured 4 seats, while allies AIADMK and Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi won 1 seat each. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy and BJP leader A. Namassivayam both secured victories.
Tamil Nadu: TVK makes strong debut
In Tamil Nadu, actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has made a strong electoral debut, emerging as the single largest party in early results.
TVK has won 65 seats and is leading in 43 of 234 seats, signalling a major political disruption. The DMK has won 25 seats and is leading in 35, while AIADMK has won 22 seats and is ahead in 23. Other parties, including Congress, BJP, and Left parties, have also secured scattered wins.
Bye-elections: BJP, Congress and NCP share wins
In bye-elections across seven constituencies:
BJP won one seat each in Gujarat, Tripura, Nagaland, and Maharashtra
Congress secured two seats in Karnataka
NCP won one seat in Maharashtra
In Baramati, NCP’s Sunetra Pawar set a national record margin with 2,18,930 votes, the highest in the country, surpassing previous records.
