Punjab braces for intense heatwave; Yellow alert issued till May 21

Chandigarh, May 17, 2026: Punjab is set to witness an intense spell of heat in the coming days, with the Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for heatwave conditions in several districts till May 21. Temperatures across the state are expected to rise steadily over the next few days.
According to Surender Pal, Director of the Chandigarh Meteorological Centre, the weather is likely to remain dry in the coming days. He said that maximum temperatures in Punjab could increase by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius by next week.
The Meteorological Department has predicted heatwave conditions between May 16 and May 20 in Fazilka, Faridkot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Bathinda, Mansa, Barnala and Sangrur districts.
Residents have been advised to avoid stepping out during afternoon hours unless necessary and to stay hydrated amid the rising temperatures.
Amid the soaring heat, the government may also take a decision regarding school timings or holidays in the affected areas.
