According to a notification issued by the Municipal Elections Branch of the Local Government Department on June 5, the post of Mayor in the Moga Municipal Corporation has been reserved for candidates belonging to the Backward Classes (BC) category. As per the prescribed procedure under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Election Rules, 1991, newly elected councillors will first take the oath of office before participating in the election of civic office-bearers. Officials have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the reservation norms during the election process. Copies of the notification have also been forwarded to the Municipal Commissioners of all eight Municipal Corporations for necessary action.
The notification marks the final step before the constitution of new civic leadership in the eight corporations and is expected to set the stage for key political contests in urban Punjab.
