Toronto (Punjab), June 12, 2026: Three Punjabi-origin men have been convicted in Canada in connection with extortion-related offences, marking what authorities describe as a significant breakthrough in ongoing investigations into organised extortion activities.
The convicted individuals have been identified as Harjot Singh, Taranveer Singh, and Dayajeet Singh Billing.
According to police, all three admitted their involvement in the cases and pleaded guilty to the charges against them.
Officials said the convictions are among the first major outcomes of a broader crackdown on extortion networks that have targeted members of the South Asian community, particularly in parts of British Columbia.
Speaking on the development, Surrey Police officer Lindsey Houghton said the convictions represent only the beginning of the legal process and indicated that additional arrests and convictions could follow as investigations continue.
Canadian law enforcement agencies have been intensifying efforts to tackle extortion-related crimes, which have raised concerns among business owners and community members in recent years.
