Chandigarh, June 23, 2026: Reiterating the Punjab Government’s commitment to the welfare and economic empowerment of persons with disabilities, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur on Monday said that more than Rs 125 crore has been released as financial assistance to beneficiaries across the state during the current financial year up to May 2026.
Sharing details of the initiative, Dr. Baljit Kaur said the Bhagwant Mann-led government is focused not only on launching welfare schemes but also on ensuring that benefits reach eligible beneficiaries in a timely manner, enabling them to lead secure and dignified lives.
“Our objective is not merely to implement welfare programmes but to ensure that every needy and differently-abled person receives timely support so that they can live with dignity, confidence and economic security,” she said.
The Cabinet Minister stated that the release of over Rs 125 crore reflects the government’s continued commitment towards protecting the rights and welfare of vulnerable sections of society.
Dr. Baljit Kaur further informed that the Punjab Government has earmarked Rs 498 crore in the 2026-27 Budget to continue providing financial assistance to persons with disabilities.
She said that more than 2.83 lakh beneficiaries across Punjab are currently availing benefits under the scheme, helping them achieve greater financial independence and reducing their dependence on others for daily livelihood needs.
The Minister explained that persons with disabilities having an annual income of Rs 60,000 or less are eligible for assistance under the scheme. Applicants must also have a disability of at least 50 per cent and should be unable to earn a livelihood independently.
Highlighting the government’s broader vision, Dr. Baljit Kaur said the dream of building a “Rangla Punjab” can only be realised when every citizen, including the most vulnerable sections, feels secure, empowered and financially stable.
She stressed that an inclusive society can be built only when persons with disabilities are provided equal opportunities and are able to participate fully in the state’s social and economic development.
Strict Directions Against Delays
Calling financial assistance to persons with disabilities a highly sensitive matter, the Minister said strict instructions have been issued to departmental officials to ensure that payments are released every month without delay.
“No delay in disbursement of financial assistance will be tolerated. Beneficiaries should receive their entitled support on time so that they do not face hardship in meeting their daily needs,” she said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Dr. Baljit Kaur said the Punjab Government will continue working towards the welfare, empowerment and social security of persons with disabilities and ensure that they remain active partners in Punjab’s journey towards inclusive growth and development.
