BJP leader RP Singh urges UK Government to reject any proposal to ban Kirpan

New Delhi, July 12, 2026: BJP National Spokesman RP Singh has urged the UK Government to reject any proposal to ban the Kirpan.
In a statement he said that the Kirpan is not a weapon of aggression. It is one of the Five Kakkars (Panj Kakkar) bestowed upon the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699. It is a sacred article of faith that symbolises justice, courage, self-defence, the protection of the weak, and the duty to stand against oppression.
The actions of one individual can never be used to criminalise an entire faith or undermine the religious freedoms of millions of law-abiding Sikhs across the world. If any individual commits a crime, that person must face the full force of the law. However, Sikhism and its sacred traditions must never be put on trial because of the actions of an individual.'
He said that any move to ban the Kirpan would deeply hurt the sentiments of the global Sikh community and send an unfortunate message about religious liberty in a democratic society that has long upheld the values of diversity, inclusion, and freedom of religion.
I respectfully urge the UK Government to reject any proposal to ban the Kirpan and to continue engaging constructively with Sikh organisations to ensure that public safety is protected while fully respecting the constitutional and human right to practice one's faith.
We have always stood firmly for the dignity, rights, and religious freedoms of Sikhs. We will continue to raise our voice for the Sikh community worldwide and urge the Government of India to engage with the UK authorities through appropriate diplomatic channels to ensure that the sacred significance of the Kirpan is fully understood and respected.
Protect faith. Punish crime. Never confuse the two.
