Language dept holds seminar on Punjabi Suba and Language Act to promote Punjabi in official work

Ferozepur, July 21, 2026: The District Language Office, Ferozepur, in collaboration with the District Library, organised a special seminar on "Punjabi Suba and the Official Language Act" to create awareness among youth about the importance of the Punjabi language, its history, and its role in official administration. A book exhibition showcasing publications of the Language Department also attracted enthusiastic participation from students.
Addressing aspirants preparing for various competitive examinations, District Language Officer Dr. Jagdeep Singh Sandhu emphasised that future government officers and employees should possess not only a sound understanding of Punjab's history, culture and linguistic heritage but also a commitment to conducting official work in Punjabi.
Dr. Sandhu explained the evolution of the Punjab Official Language Act, 1967, including amendments introduced in 2008 and 2023, highlighting how these changes have strengthened the implementation of Punjabi in government offices. He informed participants that the Language Department conducts regular inspections of government departments to ensure compliance with the Act and that provisions have also been made for action against violations.
Renowned language scholar Dr. Rameshwar Singh Katara delivered a detailed lecture on Punjab's historical, social, religious and political development from the seventh century to the present. He also discussed the formation of the Punjabi Suba, the reorganisation of Punjab in November 1966, and the sacrifices made by Punjabis to safeguard their land and mother tongue.
The programme was efficiently conducted by Rajneesh Kumar, Librarian, while Chetan Kumar and Vijay Kumar played a key role in organising the event. Organisers said the seminar significantly enhanced awareness among young participants about Punjabi language, Punjab's history and the Official Language Act.
