The Congress and other opposition leaders staged a protest outside the Prime Minister's residence, demanding accountability over repeated examination paper leaks and calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
As protesters attempted to march towards 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, Delhi Police stopped them with heavy barricading. During the protest, Rahul Gandhi sat on the road and later lay down in a symbolic act of protest before police personnel took him into custody.
Several Punjab Congress leaders were also detained, including former Punjab Chief Minister and MP Charanjit Singh Channi, MPs Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Gurjeet Singh Aujla, and Punjab Congress president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, along with several other Members of Parliament.
The Congress alleged that recurring paper leak incidents have jeopardised the future of lakhs of students and demanded that the Centre take responsibility. The party also sought the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the issue.
The Delhi Police said the detentions were carried out to maintain law and order and prevent protesters from proceeding towards the Prime Minister's residence. Several Congress leaders remained in police custody at the time of filing the report.
