Chandigarh, July 22, 2026: Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on Wednesday planted fruit trees in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha complex as part of an ongoing drive to promote environmental sustainability, urging people to join a mass movement for a greener Punjab.
Speaking on the occasion, Sandhwan said more than 40 fruit trees have already been planted within the Assembly premises and that the plantation drive will continue in the coming months.
"If we love nature, nature will return that love to us," he said, stressing that expanding green cover is essential to building a sustainable future for the state.
Expressing concern over Punjab's shrinking forest cover, Sandhwan said the state's forest area has fallen to less than 3 per cent, calling for collective efforts to reverse the trend. He said increasing tree cover is crucial not only for environmental protection but also for ensuring prosperity and a healthier ecosystem for future generations.
Drawing inspiration from Gurbani and the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, particularly Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, Sandhwan urged Punjabis to uphold their tradition of respecting nature by planting trees whenever possible.
"If we want to restore Punjab's prosperity, we must first make the state greener," he said, appealing to citizens to actively participate in expanding the state's green cover.
