Rain likely across Punjab, Chandigarh; Temperature set to rise

Chandigarh, August 21, 2026: Rain is likely at several places across Punjab and Chandigarh on Friday, with the Meteorological Centre forecasting light to moderate showers in several districts. Chandigarh is expected to remain partly cloudy, with a possibility of thunderstorms at one or two places.
The state’s average maximum temperature rose slightly by 0.3 degrees Celsius. Bathinda remained the hottest place in Punjab, recording a maximum temperature of 38 degrees Celsius. Gurdaspur received the highest rainfall in the state at 47.5 mm.
According to the Meteorological Centre, light to moderate rain is likely in Pathankot, Hoshiarpur, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar and SAS Nagar (Mohali). Rain is also likely at a few places in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala.
Similarly, light to moderate showers are expected at a few places in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala, Mansa and Sangrur.
The monsoon remains active over Punjab and Haryana. The monsoon trough is passing through Amritsar, while a western disturbance is prevailing over North Pakistan and Jammu.
The weather system over Haryana has moved towards northwest Uttar Pradesh, while the system affecting Punjab has weakened. Despite this, both states are expected to witness generally cloudy conditions, with light to moderate rainfall at many places.
Meanwhile, the water level in the state’s dams remains below the danger mark, even as rainfall activity continues in several parts of Punjab.
